
Cuttack is a famous city in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. This is one of the oldest places India. This city is the second largest city in Orissa, and the capital of that state. The correct pronunciation of Cuttack is Katak. The city is placed in a tongue of land formed by the Mahanadi River, and its main branch the Kathajodi River at their points of bifurcation.

The Cuttack city was established in 989 A.D. At that time, this city is also called as the “Millennium City”. For ten centuries, this is the capital of Orissa. After that, the capital of the Orissa was changed. At present, the capital of Orissa is Bhubaneswar, about 20 km away in 1948. Now, both Cuttack and Bhubaneswar are known as the “twin cities” of Orissa. This city is very famous works in silver, ivory, and brass works and textiles of woven silk and cotton. The city name Cuttack is taken from the Sanskrit word “Kataka”, which defines a military camp or a fort or a Government seat protected by an army.

At the time of Ganga dynasty in 1211 A.D, the Cuttack is the capital of a Kingdom founded by Anantabhimadeva. Cuttack has famous temples including Paramahansa Nath temple, Katak Chandi temple, Bhattarika temple, Dhabaleswar temple, Panchamukhi Hanuman temple. Cuttack is also famous for silver and gold filigree works. Cuttack hosts some national research laboratories such as the Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI), National Institute of Rehabilitation and Training (NIRTAR), Regional Spinal Injury Centre (RSIC), and Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre (AHRCC).
