A dowry is also known as trousseau or tocher or Kanyadaan. Kanya means daughter, and dana means gift to bridegroom. Woman brings dowry to her husband at the time of marriage. Dowry includes money, goods, or estate. Dowry also represents the bride price. Dowry is an ancient culture.

Dowry is a common culture in many countries, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Many women have been died because of the dowry problems created from her husband and his family.

The payment of a dowry has been prohibited under in 1961 Dowry Prohibition Act in Indian civil law and subsequently by sections 304B and 498a of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Many dowry deaths obtains when the newly married women, unable to bear the harassment and torture.
