Penicillin

Penicillin is also called as PCN or pen. This is a group of antibiotics derived from Penicillium fungi. Penicillin is very effective and cures many serious diseases such as syphilis and Staphylococcus infections. It can resist many types of bacteria. All penicillin are Beta-lactam antibiotics.

Penicillin can be formed by the mixture of substances. In 1928, Penicillin was discovered by Scottish scientist and Nobel laureate Alexander Fleming. The development of penicillin for use as a medicine is attributed to the Australian Nobel laureate Howard Walter Florey together with the German Nobel laureate Ernst Chain and the English biochemist Norman Heatley.

Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin was determined the chemical structure in early 1940s. In 1945, Fleming got Novel prize in medicine with Florey and Chain. On March 14, 1942, the first streptococcal septicemia patient was treated with U.S. made penicillin produced by Merck & Co.
