A computer virus is a form of malicious software. Virus is a small program which attaches itself with another program or document. Sometimes total computer system can be damaged by this virus. So we can use anti-virus software to protect entire computer system, and remove malware software, including computer viruses, worms, and Trojan horses. Signature-based detection is very useful to detect viruses or malicious patterns in executable code. However malicious patterns with no signature can also be predicted by anti-virus strategies and techniques. Heuristics, and zero-day threats can be used for detecting the dangerous virus. Generic signature is one of the important heuristic types. This can be used to identify new viruses. Some antivirus software will detect the file which has been affected by malicious patterns.

Anti-virus software is very excellent software, but it also having some drawbacks. Antivirus software can degrade computer performance if system is not designed perfectly.

Firstly, virus of a computer is removed by Bernt Fix in 1987. At that time, Internet connectivity was not widespread, viruses were widely spread by infected floppy disks. The virus checkers had to check many files if any virus entered in computer system. Now malicious software is very easy to predict or detect by a new zero-day virus. There are different antivirus software methods to identify malware such as signature based detection, malicious activity detection, Heuristic-based detection, file analysis, file emulation.
